Music theory. A little music theory goes a long way in improving your individual and the chorus musicality! Do watch the excellent pianote guides
Peter’s Landmark notes. Everyone starts by singing by an experienced singer. As you become more experienced in the chorus you will get to have your own landmark notes from the start of your favourite pieces. Many people tune and navigate by the A note. Personally I navigate by F (Hallelujah) and B (Kyrie) both of which come naturally to my voice. Other favourite “Kyries” can give you landmark notes to keep you in tune. For the black keys I use the Judy Garland song chorus. “I got rhythm I got music”. Try it and see. Music is often conducted in “four”. I start by singing in piano in 4 and just sounding the numbers (1,2,T,4) then the next bar. Imagining you playing the notes on an instrument is a great way of humming the notes and learning tricky sections. Such as can be found with Choraline. The idea is to be responsive to the conductor, score and piano but also to be as independent as possible to the point you can “read” (even memorise!) the score and just sing a capella as a four. Then your enjoyment and contribution to the chorus sound will quickly improve.
